When I woke up on Saturday it was chilly and rainy. Which wouldn’t have been too much of a problem except in order to prepare for moving to Minnesota we were having a moving sale this weekend, and the best place to display ALL of the stuff we were getting rid of was the yard. Darn you Pacific Northwest!
Needless to say, I needed something to make me feel warm and cozy. And nothing says warm and cozy to me like a plaid button down shirt. But I’m also loving the cute summery style right now, so here’s how I combined them.
I figured that shorts would make just about any outfit look like it belongs in the summer, and I love the way the feminine ivory crochet contrasts with the more masculine plaid. I love this plaid shirt in particular, because there is a little bit of purple in it, and it’s not just the standard red, black and white. I tied the front to help give the illusion of an hourglass figure, and to do something different than the standard way of wearing it loose.
I layered a graphic tee underneath the button down to serve as a neutral base, and I thought it went well with the grunge look of the plaid shirt.
A friend suggested mimosas as a way to help endure running a garage sale. I highly recommend it.
For shoes I went with my standard flat sandals because I wanted to be comfortable, and heels would make it difficult to walk around the yard in.
I love this feathered ring and the fringe on this necklace. I thought both pieces would support the boho look of the shorts.
The layers in this outfit turned out to be perfect because the weather kept waffling between cold and misty, and hot and sunny. When I got too hot I just took the shirt off and tied it around my waist. I love this graphic tee. I just think he has so much personality!

Here are some ways that other people have worn plaid in the summer, courtesy of Pinterest:
This look from Super Vaidosa is really similar to mine. It’s clever how she used the shirt as an actual belt by tucking it into the belt loops of her shorts. I love her addition of the necklace and gladiator sandals to glam it up a bit.
This look from Fashion Trends 101 is super cute. Denim with plaid is classic and I love the addition of the booties.
I love Kilee from One Little Momma‘s effortless look with a simple white tee, jeans, and white sneakers.
I’m glad I dug this shirt out of my closet. I will definitely be wearing it more this summer. Will you start wearing your plaid this summer? Let me know in the comments!
