These totes from Golden Tote are actually from the beginning of June, but I’ve been so caught up with the end of the school year, all of the other boxes arriving at my door, and receiving a wrong item, that I’m just now getting to writing a post about them. This month I ordered a Golden Tote (formerly known as the large tote) and a few days later they restocked the bathing suit I’d had my eye on. And since I didn’t want to pay boutique price for the bathing suit… I got a Surprise Tote as well.

Gingham Dream Cardigan

similar by Renee C//another Renee C vest-version//similar//similar

Initial Thoughts: This cardigan is the reason I decided to order a tote in the first place. I love gingham, and I thought the neutral colors would be very versatile in my closet. It looked lightweight, and like it would be a great layer that I could throw on without getting too hot.

The Details:

  • Brand: Dreamers
  • Cost: $40 ($30 in tote)
  • Color: Black/Ivory
  • Size: Medium
  • Material: 100% cotton
  • Washing Instructions: Hand wash/Hang dry

The Looks:

For the first look I used the cardigan to add texture and interest to an otherwise basic outfit of a black tank and jeans from Loft. A necklace from Wantable (this review) and sandals complete the look. For the second look I added some color with a blue tank, and my black scallop shorts that are also from Loft. For shoes I wore these TOMS from Trunk Club (this review). I love these shoes and I wear them all the time; they’re so comfortable. For my final outfit I wanted to change the cardigan up, so I belted it over a Gilli dress from Golden Tote. The shoes are my matte black Tieks.

The Verdict: Keep! This cardigan is very lightweight, and I love the pattern and neutral colors. It will be something to throw on to add interest but not add a lot of warmth for the summer. It’s a little stiff, which you might be able to see in the photos, but I’m hoping the fabric will relax after being washed.

Cuffed Denim Shorts

Initial Thoughts: These were actually a chosen item back in May (if I’m remembering correctly). At the time I didn’t order a tote with them because I wasn’t sure if I wanted cuffed denim shorts or if I would rather get some fun distressed ones, but since I wanted to get the gingham cardigan and needed a second chosen I decided to go for it.

The Details:

  • Brand: Just Black
  • Cost: $55 ($30 in tote)
  • Color: Medium Wash
  • Size: Medium Large (GT sent the wrong size)
  • Material: 98% cotton; 2% spandex
  • Washing Instructions: Machine wash/Tumble dry

The Looks:

These outfits contain a lot of Golden Tote, so get ready. The first outfit is with a Gilli polka-dot tee from Golden Tote that I bought off of the Facebook group, and a vest that I just kept from my last Trendsend review. My pendant necklace and TOMS finished off the look. For the second look I wanted to try to dress the shorts up a little bit, so I added a Renee C sleeveless blouse and a blazer, which are both from Golden Tote. I added my poppy Tieks to play off the coral color in the blouse. For the final look I was going for more of a summer party look, so I added heels and this surprise back tank that was my GT unicorn that I bought off of the group. I’m also wearing these earrings which are so cool because they are made with real maple leaves that have been gold plated.

The Medium vs. The Large:

The shorts pictured in the outfits above are the size larges. I contacted GT and they sent me the mediums. Below is a side by side comparison of how the two sizes fit me.

I wear a size 8 in pants (sometimes a 6 if they’re shorts). As you can see, the larges are just simply too big. They hang off of me, and the extra fabric kind of makes a frowny face in the crotch. The mediums are a teensy bit tight… but they will probably stretch a little with wear. And I would like to say that I’ll work out now that I’m not teaching. Does chasing a toddler around the house count?

The Verdict: I will be keeping the medium shorts and sending back the large ones using the prepaid return label that Golden Tote sent. Jen (GT’s customer service representative) sent me a really cute square scarf along with the medium shorts. This scarf is totally out of my comfort zone, but I kind of love it!

Spaghetti Strap Maxi

similar//similar//similar maternity dress

Initial Thoughts: …is this too 4th of July? The color in the top of the dress is actually pink, not red, so I don’t think it’s that bad. It’s comfortable and I like maxi dresses, but it has an elastic waist which sometimes sit funny on me. The dress is very soft, is lined about half way down, and has a slit up one side.

The Details:

  • Brand: Bo Bel
  • Cost: $40 ($30 in tote)
  • Color: Navy
  • Size: Medium
  • Material: 75% polyester; 25% rayon
  • Washing Instructions: Hand wash/Lay flat to dry

The Looks:

For the first look I kept the dress simple by adding a gold statement necklace from Stitch Fix and my TOMS. For the second look I wanted to dress the maxi down a little bit so I switched the heels out for sandals (I bought these at the Walking Company last summer), the statement necklace out for my pendant necklace from Wantable, and added a chambray shirt from J. Crew over the top. For my third look I wanted to show the versatility of this dress by layering a shirt over the top to make the bottom look like a navy maxi skirt. The shirt I chose is the polka-dot Gilli top. I chose to leave the shirt loose and belt it around my waist using a skinny black belt, but I also could have chosen a wider one and hidden the hem of the shirt in the belt. The necklace I chose is also from Wantable and is from the same review as the pendant necklace.

The Verdict: FSOT. I like this dress, but I’m not in love with it. I also just ordered a navy maxi skirt from Loft.com that I think will be more versatile than this maxi dress with the patterned top.

Chambray Side Tie Dress

similar//similar

Initial Thoughts: I’ve seen this dress in a few reviews and it looks super cute… on everyone but me. I’m not sure about this one. It’s also super wrinkly, although I threw it in the dryer for a few minutes and most of the wrinkles came out.

The Details:

  • Brand: Skies are Blue
  • Cost: $40 ($30 in tote)
  • Color: Blue
  • Size: Medium
  • Material: chambray is 100% tensel; contrast is 65% cotton/35% rayon
  • Washing Instructions: Hand wash/Lay flat to dry

The Looks:

For the first look I wore my sandals and Wantable necklace. For the second look I dressed it up for work by wearing heels and a blazer from Golden Tote. The pendant necklace is also from Golden Tote. For the third look I changed up the dress by adding a wide belt at the seam of the chambray and hid the knot. I added a white statement necklace and my TOMS. In this look you can see that the chambray is just a layer on top of the body of the dress, and not the top of the dress itself.

The Verdict: FSOT. I don’t really like the shape of this one on me unless I belt it, and if I do that I’m covering up the unique feature of the dress.

Floral Sleeveless Top

similar//similar//similar

Initial Thoughts: This looks identical to the one I received in my last tote that I ultimately ended up returning. This one has blues instead of pinks, and the cut of the shirt is a little different, but it’s still swingy and gives me boob-tent.

The Details:

  • Brand: Jella C
  • Cost: $40 ($30 in tote)
  • Color: Blue
  • Size: Medium
  • Material: 100% polyester
  • Washing Instructions: Hand wash/Hang dry

The Looks:

The first look is with some black skinny jeans from Golden Tote, silver laser cut earrings from Wantable, an my matte black Tieks. The second look is with a Golden Tote denim pencil skirt and necklace, and my sandals. The third look is with white boyfriend jeans, also from Golden Tote, and my TOMS.

The Verdict: FSOT. This top is just not for me, I love the print, but I’m not a fan of the fabric or cut of this shirt. I also don’t think it’s going to fit my lifestyle. At the end of the summer we’re moving to Minnesota and I’m transitioning from being a high school teacher to a stay at home mom. For those reasons I’m not going to keep this top.

Lace Bow Back Tank

similar//similar//very similar

Initial Thoughts: This one is cute and feels pretty high quality – which is usually not how I feel about lace. The front is lined but not the back, which is interesting. The bow is really cute too.

The Details:

  • Brand: Cesem
  • Cost: $40 ($30 in tote)
  • Color: White (with black detail)
  • Size: Medium
  • Material: 63% polyester, 35% nylon, 2% spandex
  • Washing Instructions: Hand wash/Hang dry

The Looks:

For the first look I wanted to show how the shirt could be dressed up with a black pencil skirt from Golden Tote, my matte black Tieks, and my Wantable pendant necklace. For the second look I dressed it down with a chambray button-up from J. Crew, my white boyfriends, a beaded pendant necklace that looks like a geode, and my TOMS. For the final look I wore my black scalloped shorts and added a mint statement necklace from Stitch Fix and poppy Tieks for color.

The Verdict: Keep! I love the quality of this shirt, and the bow in the back is super fun. I think this will work well both for casual occasions and even for a date night outfit.

Striped Dress

similar//similar//similar

Initial Thoughts: This is cute… but it just passes the fingertip test. Even though I’m not teaching anymore. I still don’t really like to wear short dresses. So I’m not sure on this one. The dress feels high quality and it is lined.

The Details:

  • Brand: Bo Bel
  • Cost: $40 ($30 in tote)
  • Color: Stripe
  • Size: Medium
  • Material: 62% polyester, 33% rayon, 5% spandex
  • Washing Instructions: Hand wash/Lay flat to dry

The Looks:

The first look is with my mint Wantable necklace, TOMS, and this cool beaded bracelet with a wooden clasp I just bought. For the second look I threw on a gray jacket from Golden Tote, and added a pendant necklace and sandals. For the third look I decided to dress it up a bit and added a black cardigan from Golden Tote, my mint Stitch Fix necklace, and matte black Tieks.

The Verdict: FSOT. Even if I could get past the length, the pattern doesn’t match up on the side, and the dip in the back shows my bra strap. All those things just add up to this dress not being very wearable for me.

Feather Print Cap Sleeve Top

similar//similar

Initial Thoughts: This shirt would be great if I were still working. I love the pattern but the fabric of the shirt doesn’t seem casual enough to me. It’s really cute though… I’m unsure.

The Details:

  • Brand: Fun2Fun
  • Cost: $40 ($30 in tote)
  • Color: White
  • Size: Medium
  • Material: 100% polyester
  • Washing Instructions: Hand wash/Hang dry

The Looks:

For the first look I wanted to add color to the black and white top, so I wore my coral shorts from Trunk Club (this review), my Wantable pendant necklace (can you tell I wear this a lot?), a white and gold bracelet, and my TOMS. For the next outfit I dressed it down a little more by wearing Loft jeans and sandals, along with my mint Wantable necklace. I figured for the final look I should show what it would look like tucked into a black pencil skirt. I added my matte black Tieks and gold leaf earrings.

The Verdict: Keep. I went back and fourth on this one for a long time. Ultimately I decided to keep it because I love the print and I think it will look really adorable in the fall tucked into a brown A-line skirt or layered under a mustard cardigan. I don’t have either of those things, but a girl can dream. Or shop. I hear there’s a giant mall in Minneapolis.

Retro One-Piece

similar//similar//similar

Initial Thoughts: I love this! Originally I was unsure about the halter neck because that tends to do a number on my posture, but fortunately I don’t think that’s going to be a problem.

The Details:

  • Brand: Stylish Swimwear
  • Cost: $40 ($35 as add-on)
  • Color: Navy Multi
  • Size: Medium
  • Material: 82% nylon, 18% spandex
  • Washing Instructions: Hand wash/hang dry

img_8290

The Verdict: I love this swim suit. I’m hoping to take Little Man to the pool frequently this summer, so this will get a lot of use.

Overall:

While I wish I had been a little more blown away by my surprises, when I bought the totes I was hoping that I wouldn’t like most of them so I could sell them and make back a little bit of money. So I guess my wish came true. I love my chosen items and I think I will get a lot of use out of the two surprise tops I kept. I also got an extra surprise from Jen that is pushing me out of my comfort zone in a great way.
