2014 Scarlet Smack Merlot
I’m not sure what I think about this wine label. It definitely reminds me of Rocky Horror Picture Show, and similar to that production, I’m not sure if I find it appealing or minorly disturbing. Either way, I think it’s an appropriate label for the “Scarlet Smack” Merlot and the recipe pairing.
But first, the wine.
I thought this wine was pretty good. As the card says, it’s very drinkable, although I don’t know if I would describe it as “Lip-smackin’ good” except for the fact that I appreciate the pun. I rated this bottle 4 out of 5 stars. It is very fruity, and I thought it paired excellently with chocolate… Which brings me to the recipe.
The recipe pairing with this wine was for chocolate and strawberries.
I sent my husband to the store, and instead of getting bittersweet baking chocolate he purchased mini semi-sweet chocolate chips. The plus-side is that made making the ganache really easy, because I didn’t have to chop up the chocolate. The downside is that the ganache tastes like chocolate chips. Not that I don’t like chocolate chips… I was just hoping to have something different. But! Since this was so easy to make, we can always try again soon.
I just put the chocolate chips in a bowl, and then heated up the cream in a saucepan. You want to be really careful with the cream. You don’t want it to scorch or boil, you just need it to be hot enough to melt the chocolate.
Once the cream was hot I poured it into the chocolate chips…
…and then it magically turns into ganache! We just added a pinch of salt to enhance the flavor of the chocolate.
Here is the result! Once we ran out of strawberries, we finished up the ganache with bananas. It’s a delicious dessert and super easy to whip up after dinner.
I love getting wine from Winc because it gives us an excuse to mix up our dinner routine a little bit. Have you tried it yet? Feel free to use my link to sign up, if you do you’ll get a discount on your first box. Also, be sure to follow the blog to stay tuned for the next two bottles in my box.
