Yeah I know. If you read my first Trunk Club review you’re probably wondering… wait, I thought you said you were going to only get a trunk once every three months?! Well… I changed my mind. You see, Trunk Club is such a great deal because there is no styling fee, and shipping is free both ways! I figured it’s risk free, so why not get a trunk every month? So here we are at my second trunk. Unfortunately, it was kind of a disappointing one.
This time I actually thought to show you what my stylist Hannah included in my trunk preview:
Here are the items accepted. Once again I eliminated all but four items out of my preview. Not by design, I was just hoping for longer dresses/skirts, and I didn’t want to spend that much on accessories-especially sunglasses. Since I wear glasses 99.9% of the time, I never use sunglasses.
The strange part is Trunk Club says they’ll send you around 15 items. In the preview my stylist sent me there were only 10 items, and then once she put my trunk together it only had 8 items. I’m a little bummed because one of the things I like about Trunk Club is the number of pieces. You’re more likely to get something you like if you’re looking at 15 items instead of only 5 like some other clothing subscriptions. My stylist also didn’t make any outfit suggestions like she did last time. Maybe she was just really busy when putting this all together…?
In any case… on to the reveal!
‘Jasmyn’ Ghillie Sandal
Initial Impressions: I’m not sure I need these sandals, but when I saw them in the preview I wanted to try them because they are so cute!
- Brand: Dolce Vita
- Cost: $89.95
- Color: Dark Saddle Suede
- Size: 8
- Material: Leather and/or genuine calf hair (China) upper/synthetic lining and sole.
The Verdict: Return. These sandals are really cute and the leather straps are really soft and comfortable. I’m just not feeling the need to spend the money on them right now – even though they’re currently on sale. The only shoes I really need right now are some cute fashion sneakers (that’s on my list to ask for next time).
Printed Maxi Dress
Initial Impressions: This dress is very pretty, but isn’t a color I would normally wear. I’m really wanting to live in maxi dresses and skirts this summer, so I was excited to see this.
- Brand: Felicity & Coco
- Cost: $88
- Color: Pink Watercolor
- Size: (website recommends sizing down)
- Material: 95% viscose rayon, 5% spandex
- Washing Instructions: Dry clean or hand wash cold, lay flat to dry
For the first look and third looks I kept the styling simple by adding shoes and a different necklace. The TOMS in the first look are from my first trunk, and I absolutely love them. I wear them all the time. I can even wear them for an entire day of teaching and my feet don’t hurt. I highly recommend them. For the second look I was going for a beachy look by adding a chambray shirt and sandals. I tied the dress up to keep the hem off of the ground because this dress is quite long on me – for reference I’m 5’7″.
The Verdict: Return. The pattern is pretty but not really my style. The dress itself is very soft and comfortable, but I’m not comfortable wearing the low cut front and because of the way the straps wrap regular bra straps show. I also struggled to style it in enough different ways for me to justify keeping it.
Initial Impressions: These shorts are EXPENSIVE but look really cute and comfortable. I love the bow tie in the front.
- Brand: Kate Spade
- Cost: $138
- Color: Mill Navy
- Size: (website recommends sizing up if between sizes)
- Material: 100% Tencel® lyocell
- Washing Instructions: Dry clean or machine wash cold, tumble dry low
For the first and second looks I paired the shorts with a tank (the first is from Stitch Fix in this review, the second is from Golden Tote), a white statement necklace, and my TOMS and poppy Tieks respectively. In the third look I layered a Loft tee underneath a fringe cardigan from Golden Tote, my matte black Tieks, and a necklace from Wantable (this review).
The Verdict: Return. These shorts are really cute, but I’m looking for shorts that are a little more casual than these, and they cost way more than I would ever think of spending on shorts.
Shoulder Pleat Sleeveless Tee
Initial Impressions: This top is really soft and has a simple detail that gives it a little personality.
- Brand: Trouvé
- Cost: $39
- Color: Grey Heather
- Size: Medium
- Material: 100% modal
- Washing Instructions: Hand wash cold, dry flat
For the first look I wore my new black scalloped shorts from Loft, a white statement necklace, and sandals. The second look is with Dear John wide leg jeans from Stitch Fix, floral ballet flats from Golden Tote, and a necklace from Wantable. The third look is with a chambray from Trendsend, coral shorts from my last trunk, my TOMS and another Wantable necklace (this review).
The Verdict: Return. I was contemplating keeping this because it is so soft and comfortable, and I love a “non-basic basic” like this. However, I think the shoulder detail makes my shoulders look wider, and after looking at the pictures I don’t think it’s that flattering on me. I was also struggling to get the pleats to stay the way I thought they were supposed to sit.
Stripe Midi Shirtdress
Initial Impressions: This dress is… so not my style. I’m not quite sure what to say about it. I’m not a huge fan of menswear on me, I like more feminine styles. I also don’t like the color or pattern.
- Brand: Olivia Palermo + Chelsea28
- Cost: $128
- Color: Ivory Menswear Stripe
- Size: Medium
- Material: 100% viscose
- Washing Instructions: Dry clean
The first look was styled simply with a white statement necklace and my poppy Tieks for color. The second look I layered on a denim jacket, a statement necklace from Stitch Fix, and my TOMS. For the last look I wanted to really change up the dress, so I opened it up and treated it like a duster. To prevent the outfit from being too busy I chose a basic black tank from Loft, Just Black skinnies from Stitch Fix, a pendant necklace from Golden Tote, and my black Tieks.
The Verdict: Return. I’m so not a fan of this dress. Maybe if the print were different, and if it were shorter, and if it were more fitted, and if the slit wasn’t so high… yeah… this one really isn’t doing it for me.
Blouson Tank Dress
Initial Impressions: I’m not sure what to do with the elastic that goes around the waist. Otherwise I think this is a cute dress. The racer back makes it a little bit of a challenge because I can’t wear a regular bra with it. Also black isn’t a color that I wear a whole lot of.
- Brand: Halogen
- Cost: $68
- Color: Black-Ivory Triple Stripe
- Size: Medium
- Material: 95% rayon, 5% spandex
- Washing Instructions: Machine wash cold, dry flat
For the first look I styled it simply with heels and a pendant necklace. For the second look I wanted to dress it down, so I wrapped a chambray around my waist (you can use it as an extra layer as it gets cold) and my TOMS. For the third look I added a Ellison jacket from Golden Tote and a statement necklace from Stitch Fix, then wore sandals.
The Verdict: Return. The look of this dress is really cute, but I find the actual cut of it problematic, especially the elastic bit.
High/Low Crepe Top
Initial Impressions: I should have looked up these items online before keeping them in my trunk. This top, while super cute looking, has a couple of strikes against it because of the material/washing instructions.
- Brand: 1. State
- Cost: $79
- Color: Cloud
- Size: Medium
- Material: 100% rayon
- Washing Instructions: Dry clean
The first look is with my black shorts from Loft, sandals, and a necklace from Stitch Fix. The second look is with leggings because I wanted to take advantage of the low back of the shirt. I layered on a denim jacket, a scarf and necklace from Stitch Fix, and booties. For the third look I wanted to see how it would look tucked into my new favorite skirt from Golden Tote. I added a belt to ground the look, a white statement necklace, and my TOMS.
The Verdict: Return. I LOVE this shirt. My husband thinks it looks like it’s made out of toilet paper, and my sister thinks it looks like a maternity shirt, but I think it’s soooooo cute! I would keep this if not for the fact that it’s 100% rayon and dry clean only. Those are no-can-dos for me. So sad.
Denim Chambray Tank
Initial Impressions: This shirt would be really versatile, and would be a great addition to my wardrobe. That being said, it’s a little expensive and looks like it would wrinkle super easily – if the condition out of the box is any indication.
- Brand: Two by Vince Camuto
- Cost: $79
- Color: Authentic
- Size: Medium
- Material: 100% Tencel lyocell
- Washing Instructions: Machine wash cold, tumble dry low
For the first look I wore the tank with my black Loft shorts, a pendant necklace, and sandals. For the second look I wanted to dress it up a bit, so I threw on a blazer and switched out the shorts for my white boyfriend jeans from Golden Tote. My poppy Tieks once again added a great pop of color. For the third look I wanted to do something different so I tucked it into a skirt I bought from Loft a couple of years ago. Looking at the pictures, I wish I had added a belt to ground the look a little more. My white statement necklace and TOMS finish off the look.
The Verdict: Return. This tank would be a great addition to my wardrobe, but I’m just not in love with it, and it seems kind of expensive for the quality. It’s also a little baggy and boxy on me.
If you’ve been keeping track you’ll notice I’m returning the whole trunk, which I’m really bummed about. The advantage of Trunk Club is that you don’t have to pay a styling fee, so I’m not losing any money. This means I’m not pressured into buying anything, which is great because I can focus on keeping pieces that will really work for me and that I love. Next month I think I’ll give my stylist a little more direction, and hopefully she’ll send me more options – be sure to follow me to receive a notification when I review my next one!
