For Memorial Day we decided to take a quick day trip up the Oregon Coast. We drove from Eugene to Florence, then up to Newport and stopped at Heceta Head Lighthouse and Strawberry Hill on the way.
We spent most of the day at the lighthouse. Tectonic forces lifted rocks out of the water and then the less durable material was eroded away to expose the interesting basalt formations that you see. Little Man absolutely loved the water. His face lit up with delight every time a wave came up and ran over his feet!
Along the beach there are also some really cool caves. We had a lot of fun exploring them.
After playing on the beach we decided to hike up to the lighthouse. It isn’t really that far, but Little Man would get tired and sit down in the middle of the trail. He walked a good portion of the way, but Kyle, my Mother-in-Law and I also took turns carrying him up.
The lighthouse is really cool. At the top is a Fresnel Lens which captured the light from a 5-wick oil lamp and reflected it across the water. Since then the oil lamp has been replaced by more modern devices.
For this trip I wanted to look casual and beachy, while still protecting myself from the not-quite-summer-weather. I chose a light-colored chambray shirt from J. Crew Mercantile, my new tank from Trendsend (see the review here), JustBlack boyfriend jeans from Golden Tote, and sandals from The Walking Company. My earrings (which you can’t really see, but they’re the pink ones I got from this review) and clutch are both from Wantable.
My husband Kyle is also wearing some stylish clothes! His hoodie is from Five Four Club. (Sign up through this link to save $15 on your first order!) Little Man is wearing clothes from Gymboree; we thought his pirate sweatshirt would be good protection against the winds, and fit the theme of the beach.
We drove up to Newport and had dinner at the Chowder Bowl. Their clam chowder is amazing – it comes with a pat of butter on top! I also had a giant bowl of delicious steamer clams (more butter, ha!).
After buying an embarrassing amount of Salt Water Taffy and some coffee to keep us awake we headed home. Little Man of course fell asleep in the car – it was a big day with lots of adventure (and walking). We hope we can come back soon.
