I’m so excited! I haven’t bought a tote since the beginning of April, and now I have THREE totes to tear into. I couldn’t resist any longer because I kept seeing really awesome items while stalking the Facebook reveals of other subscribers, so I bought two surprise totes a few hours before the new mid-May chosen items went “live” on the website. Then a couple of days later they restocked the Afternoon Adventure dress (which I regretted not getting from the May tote) so I snatched one up in a small tote.

However I’m really having a hard time with my totes… for the first time I’m contemplating sending them all back. I really struggled with deciding what to keep, what to sell, and what to return.

I absolutely love Golden Tote. Read this post to read about Golden Tote and why I love it so much. On to the reveal!

Afternoon Adventure Dress

Initial impressions: This dress was a chosen item from the beginning of April. When it was initially released, I really liked it but decided I could live without it. Also, I wasn’t sure how it would look because of the shift style. I typically prefer my dresses to be more fitted in order to show an hourglass shape. After seeing how much everyone loved it in their reveals I kind of regretted it, so when it was restocked I decided to jump on it.

The Details:

  • Brand: Ellison
  • Color: Chambray
  • Size: Medium
  • Fabric: 100% Cotton
  • Washing Instructions: Hand wash/Hang dry

The Looks:

The first look is just styled with some sandals and some silver boho earrings from Wantable. The second look I added a belt to give it some shape, added a cardigan from Golden Tote, and my TOMS from Trunk Club. Check out my review of Trunk Club when I got these amazing shoes here. The third look reminds me of a music festival – or at least what I think one would look like. I added a chosen cardigan from Golden Tote and belted the whole thing to give it some shape.

The Verdict: I think this dress could be really versatile, but it’s a little shorter than I was hoping, and I’m really on the lookout for a more fitted chambray dress. But it’s so cute… I decided to keep this, especially because I love the surprise dress that came with it.

Surprise 1: Floral Dress

Initial impressions: This is the surprise that came in the small tote with the Afternoon Adventure dress. It’s really pretty, I love the print. The back also has a lot of personality.

The Details:

  • Brand: My Story
  • Color: Ivory Multi
  • Size: Medium
  • Fabric: 100% Polyester
  • Washing Instructions: Handwash/Line Dry

The Looks:

The first look is styled simply with my TOMS and the same earrings from earlier. For the second look I added a belt and my poppy colored Tieks which really bring out that color in the dress. The third look I threw on a chambray shirt from Trendsend and tied it to give a more defined waist. The back is also really fun, here is a picture: img_6998

The Verdict: This dress is super cute and totally my style. The only issues are the top doesn’t fit quite right (this could maybe be alleviated by shortening the straps?) and I can’t wear a regular bra with it. I’m thinking about going to the mall and buying one of those cute bras that are meant to be shown.

UPDATE: I bought a bralette at Victoria Secret, and not only does it look adorable with the dress, it also fixed my fit issues. This dress is officially a keeper.

Surprise 2: Striped Tee with Trim

Initial impressions: It’s cute… I’m not sure I like the detail. I appreciate that it’s there, but I don’t really care for the pattern itself.

The Details:

  • Brand: Skies are Blue
  • Color: Stripe
  • Size: Medium
  • Fabric: 95% Polyester/5% Spandex
  • Washing Instructions: Hand Wash/Dry Flat

The Looks:

My natural instinct with stripes is to pair them with a floral, however I didn’t have any floral that didn’t clash with the pattern, so I had to go in a different direction. The coral shorts in the first outfit are ones I kept from Trunk Club, and the sandals are from The Walking Company. For the second look I added the chambray top, an orange pendant necklace from Stitch Fix, my TOMS, and JustBlack boyfriend jeans from Golden Tote. This outfit and the next one feel like cheating because I’m covering up the pattern, but I wanted to show how the shirt would look underneath something. The third outfit is dressed up for work. I added a blazer I received from Golden Tote, JustBlack jeans from Stitch Fix, and the heels I wore for my wedding.

The Verdict: Red and blue is just not my color palette, as evidenced by the fact that I really struggled to find clothing items I had that would complement the shirt. If the pattern was different, I would keep this shirt. This shirt was returned.

Surprise 3: Floral Tank

Initial impressions: Love the print! However I’ll have to do something about my bra straps, and I’m concerned about boob-tenting – which is a serious problem. For reference I’m size 34DD.

The Details:

  • Brand: Jella C
  • Color: White Multi
  • Size: Medium
  • Fabric: 100% Polyester
  • Washing Instructions: Hand Wash/Hang Dry

The Looks:

The first look I would wear on a night out. I paired the tank with my jeans from Stitch Fix and my TOMS. The second look is more casual. The jeans and cardigan are both from Golden Tote and the necklace is from Wantable. The third look would be great for work. I kept this cardigan from Stitch Fix, and the skirt is from Golden Tote.

The Verdict: I really wish this tank were more fitted. I love the pattern and I think it would be a fun and fairly versatile addition to my closet. However, it’s just not flattering on me unless it’s tucked in, and then you don’t see the cute layered detail. I won’t be keeping this one. This top was returned.

Surprise 4: Printed Maxi

Initial impressions: Again I love the print and the colors. It fits me really well too. The elastic waist is a little itchy though…

The Details:

  • Brand: Joy & Co
  • Color: Coral
  • Size: Medium
  • Fabric: 85% Cotton/15% Viscose
  • Washing Instructions: Machine Wash Warm/Hang Dry

The Looks:

The first look is just the maxi dress with some simple styling. Since the maxi is so busy I wanted to keep the jewelry simple so I just added a pink bracelet from Golden Tote. For the second look I added a chambray shirt from J. Crew and knotted it to give a casual feel. The first two looks really are just the same look. You could go to the beach and knot it up to keep the skirt out of the sand, and then throw on a chambray shirt when it gets cooler. For the third look I wanted to do something really different. I made the maxi dress look like a skirt by layering on a tee from Elizabeth&Clarke (my summer collection is going to ship June 1st and I’m so excited!). I belted it and added a chunky white necklace for some interest.

The Verdict: There are a lot of things I like about this dress, but I’m concerned that it’s a little wild for me and the bodice is a little itchy. Although once I wore it around a little I stopped noticing it, so maybe it wouldn’t be a problem. Ultimately I decided I didn’t want the other two items, and after posting them FSOT on Facebook and not getting any offers, I decided to return the tote. To keep this dress would have been $40, and I didn’t love this dress $40 worth. So this was returned along with the rest of the tote.

Surprise 5: Lace Skirt

Initial impressions: Cute but short! Apparently I didn’t have mini-skirts selected as an item I didn’t want. Although this probably isn’t considered a mini. I should put a note with a preferred length in my profile.

The Details:

  • Brand: She & Sky
  • Color: Peach
  • Size: Medium
  • Fabric: Lace is 70% Cotton/30% Polyester; Lining is 100% Polyester
  • Washing Instructions: Hand Wash/Hang Dry

The Looks:

For the first look I just added a plain white tank and layered my chambray shirt over it. This look would be good for errands or going to the park with my son. The necklace is from Wantable, read my review here. For the second look I wanted to add a little edge to the very romantic skirt, so I added a graphic tee from Loft. I love the personality of this tee, and I enjoy wearing it in unexpected ways like underneath blazers. For the final look I really wanted to play with patterns and textures, so I added a polka dot sweater and a scarf from Loft. A great way to make short skirts work appropriate is to add leggings underneath, this outfit would also help keep me warm in early spring when it’s still cold but I wish it wasn’t.

The Verdict: Ok, so this skirt isn’t as short as I thought it was when I first tried it on. I love the color and the texture, but I’m concerned the skirt is too short and I won’t wear it. I wish I had some lighter colored leggings, that might help me decide if I would wear it during the spring/summer. This skirt was returned along with everything else in my second surprise tote. I would have thought about keeping this one, but again the other items didn’t sell right away on Facebook, and I didn’t want to pay $40 to keep this.

Surprise 6: Floral Ruffle Dress

Initial impressions: Cute print, but again, really short. Also very baggy and ruffley. And the elastic waist hits me in an uncomfortable spot.

The Details:

  • Brand: Miss Love
  • Color: Multi
  • Size: Medium
  • Fabric: Shell is 100% Rayon; Lining is 100% Polyester
  • Washing Instructions: Hand wash cold/Hang Dry

The Looks:

The first look is styled simply with a white braided belt, black heels, and a coral clutch I received from Wantable. They recently added clutches to their collection, and I was really excited to get this one. This would be great for a night out. The second look is more casual with my TOMS and my chambray shirt from Trendsend. The third look is my attempt at work appropriate. I say attempt because the lace-up in front is pretty revealing even when tight. I would definitely need to wear a tank under this to make it appropriate to wear around high school students. The cardigan is from Stitch Fix and the booties are from DSW. In all three looks I’m wearing a simple gold chain with a single pearl on it I received from Wantable. I wanted something that would fill the space without competing with the busy pattern on the dress.

The Verdict: I wish this dress were longer and less exposed and ruffley. I love the outfits I created, but I think this dress just doesn’t do what I need it to. It’s really a shame though because I love the pattern. This dress was returned.

Surprise 7: Mock Neck Tunic

Initial impressions: Meh. Not sure I like the high neck, or the need to wear leggings in the summer.

The Details:

  • Brand: Jella C
  • Color: Blue
  • Size: Medium
  • Fabric: 69% Polyester/31% Polyester (yes, that’s what the tag says)
  • Washing Instructions: Hand Wash/Hang Dry

The Looks:

Since this is a tunic I needed to add something underneath. In the first outfit I went with leggings, my TOMS, a necklace from Stitch Fix, and a belt. For the second look I wanted to do something different, so I put crocheted shorts from Loft underneath. The shorts are just barely long enough to peek out from underneath the tunic, and you can see it on the sides where the tunic is cut back. I added a scarf from Golden Tote and my clutch from Wantable. For the third outfit I wanted to do something more work appropriate so I added a chosen blazer from Golden Tote and a necklace from Wantable (see the review here).

The Verdict: This definitely grew on me after making outfits. I especially like that the shorts look pretty cute under it, so I wouldn’t necessarily have to wear leggings. I’m just not sure if I want to add this to my closet. This tunic was returned.

Overall Impressions

Overall the style of these totes are me, but the pieces themselves are giving me serious pause. I’m trying really hard just to keep things that I love, and I’m not sure I’m in love with anything. I decided to keep the Mini Tote with the Afternoon Adventure dress and the My Story floral dress, and return the two surprise totes. Even though I returned them, I will still order from Golden Tote again. The price per item is a great deal if the items work out.
